| - I have grown up with Hugo's Cellars. My first time here was with my high school boyfriend for the prom. I was all impressed when I walked in and they gave me a red rose. Next time was with my parents and then my husband took me while we were dating. This would be my fourth visit.
I was craving a return visit for some reason, maybe because my Dad used to enjoy this place so much and now he has passed on. Anyway, it had been many years since I had been so off we went.
Upon arrival, I was glad to see that they still had the tradition of giving all the women in the party roses. So classy! We were then sat in the main dining room at a small, intimate table for four. If you have never been, the restaurant is dimly light for romance and ambiance. The ceiling is low and I adore the brick on the walls. Our server Oscar had all our roses placed in a vase so we had our own floral centerpiece. The sommelier approached the table and provided his wine recommendation. We then placed our orders. I had ordered a bowl of Lobster Bisque which was really creamy and featured some nice chunks of lobster. I absolutely devoured this bisque. Eric approached our table shortly after this and was ready to personalize our choice of salad from the salad cart. He asked each one of us what ingredients we wanted in our salads. There were many choices such as anchovies, mushrooms, tomatoes, hardboiled eggs, pine nuts, toasted croutons and a choice of dressings. I was disappointed with this cart. When I think of a salad, I envision, carrots, cucumbers, radishes, garbanzo beans in other words veggies!
Once the salads were finished, we were all brought a small cone of raspberry sorbet to cleanse our palates. This is special touch where I feel Hugo's stands out. Along with the outstanding service that is truly hard to beat.
Onto our entree's. I had ordered the filet and shrimp. My steak was cooked just as I had asked, but was really just ok. I felt the green peppercorn sauce was a little overbearing and took away from the taste of my dinner. My husband had ordered the prime rib and found it tasty but really heavy. My daughter being a non red meat eater, had the vegetarian plate which was a spinach ravioli and garlic mashed potatoes (odd combo) with a pesto sauce. I saw her take a couple bites but never finished it.
Oscar was kind enough to bring us the dessert tray with chocolate strawberries, apricots and creampuffs. Other than that, no one ordered dessert.
I am not sure why this dinner was just A OK but it was. Maybe it's because we don't eat very much red meat anymore, or maybe we are just over old school steakhouses living in Las Vegas so long and there are so many dining choices. Or maybe Hugo's was just having an off night.
If you have never experienced this kind of dining, than you should try it at least once. For the downtown area, this is a long time favorite and although pricey this place will have you stepping back in time to when steakhouses were where it's at!
