  • I had the misfortune of having to be air lifted off this mountain by LVMPD search & rescue on January 1st 2016. My story goes like this ... Had friends in town staying with us for the holidays and decided to go check out the awesome city view up top. I have hiked this mountain several times before. It is steep and scraggly and no shortages of loose gravel. If you are headed up and lose your balance or footing, no problems as most likely you would fall forward on the trail. If you fall off the trail, its a different story and could be deadly. On my way back down from the top, about 30 steps in, the trail is very steep with loose gravel. My left foot lost traction at the same time all my body weight was on it and it caused my knee to buckle inward and hyper extend just enough to snap my quad tendon. As i was falling forward & downward, i heard a loud "snap" noise much like a dead tree branch breaking. I broke my fall with my hands ( rocks are razor sharp and my hands were cut up ) and was able to sit upright at which point i almost passed out. I wasnt sure what had happened but i was unable to stand or let alone walk. Thank god my friend was with me. He assessed the situation and proceeded to call 911 for help. I thought i broke my leg. In case you were wondering, i had hiking boots on. It took me a good 15 minutes to collect myself after the fall. My advice is exercise extreme care and due diligence on the trail, especially on the way back down. After 12 months of therapy, I decided to go back up, this time with hiking poles for stability. Done properly, the way back down will take 3 times longer than going up by utilizing proper foot placement and transfering of weight. At the bottom and conclusion of the hike, i was reminded how dangerous it is. The views are amazing and at the top its about 600 ft. up. I know i am not the only one who had to be air lifted off the mountain. I cannot emphasize safety enough on this trail but dont let my misfortune scare you off. Just dont underestimate the danger potential here. I would not bring my kids here. Hindsight is always 20/20. If you dont have hiking poles, this mountain will teach why you need them. DO NOT TAKE THIS HIKE FOR GRANTED!
