  • This bakery, La Conca d'Oro, or Pot of Gold, completes the trifecta of great Italian bakeries on Rue Jean-Talon Est. Their offerings are delicious, varied, authentic, reasonably priced ... and did I mention delicious? Also, their location implies that they are true to form, as opposed to being an "also ran." Say we're talking about Rolex watches. If on Rodeo Drive, you will certainly be looking at real ones. On the other hand, if a sketchy individual opened up their coat jacket, only to reveal many dangling timepieces, those would be fake ones. The same applies here with regard to Montreal's "Little Italys." There's the fake (now trendy and decontented) original Little Italy ... and the real Little Italy, along Jean-Talon Est, toward Lacordaire. That said, La Conca d'Oro, along with Alati and Italia, two other patisseries I've reviewed along the Yelp journey, are located close to each other in the real Little Italy. I remember walking out of La Conca d'Oro with 3 items - a cannolo, a mille foglie, and something else. I vowed to pace myself. I did not. They were that good. Not only that, the service here was very good. I was helped by the energetic and very affable apparent proprietress who really seems to be proud of her store and enjoy what she does. And why shouldn't she? And, more importantly, why shouldn't we? The service also helped cement my very positive opinion of La Conca d'Oro. La Conca d'Oro, Alati, and Italia are all different. While Alati is almost purely a patisserie and Italia has features of a grocery store, La Conca d'Oro is, first and foremost, a patisserie but it also has some hot food, such as pizza and focaccia, though I didn't indulge. Either way, since I love both La Conca d'Oro and Alati, they both get 5 stars. Heck, if waking up in Montreal for a series of days, rotate and try each of them on different days. La Conca d'Oro e' molto buona!
