| - Yeah, I get it. It's an institution; an ancient Cleveland landmark if you will. A throwback to the way Grandma used to shop for groceries and barter with the local purveyors in a urban type atmosphere. Now that the nostalgia has run it's coarse, it should be noted that there are better (ie. fresher and more flavorful) alternatives to this market for local produce and meat.
I write this review as not to bash the WSM, but educate those who may not be aware of the alternatives. I like the WSM, the ambiance, and the unique experience, but this market isn't really a true Farmer's Market. I've heard that term thrown around in the past to describe it and it's not really accurate. The WSM is more of a conglomeration of vendors peddling their food products under one roof in an old-world type fashion. Some local, some not so much.
For the most part, the produce is nothing special at all and most is imported from Chili, New Zealand or California. The fruits and veggies sold here are already at it's peak ripeness. In other words, if you don't plan on eating the produce you purchase here either that day or the next, it will be past it's desired shelf life sooner rather than later.
As for the inside concourse, I applaud the WSM's ability to attract some local vendors such as Ohio City Pasta, Pierogi Palace and a few choice bakeries. As for the meat and seafood sections, yes the variety is expansive, but again, the majority of the end product is neither local, naturally raised, free-range or organic. Not much dissemblance between what can be found at your local big-box grocer.
For a much fresher, more seasonal, local and conscious approach, try one of our many local farmers market such as the North Union Market.
