Here's the, erm...SCOOP: The Big Chill has a lot going for it. It's bright, clean, cheery, and kitschy in a way that references olde tyme ice cream shoppes. The staff is great, doesn't rush you, and, the later you visit The Big Chill, the better the chance of hearing hip hop mash-ups blasting through the store. WIN.
Cool offerings? Ice cream, frozen yogurt, sundaes, floats, smoothies, and non-dairy ices. I have only ever had the ice cream (and, fine, I confess --- a bite of a banana sundae!) and every time it has just been...ok. Flavours seem muted, consistency isn't particularly creamy, scoops aren't dense. The ice cream itself just doesn't seem to match up with how carefully other details of The Big Chill have been managed.
I keep on giving The Big Chill a chance because I love independent neighbourhood spots with great service. And, well...the sweet smell of the waffle cones wafting down the street is enough to test even the steeliest willpower.
Yelp note: located on the corner of College and Manning and with several benches directly outside...this is prime Little Italy people watching, if you can snag a seat.
