| - This Giant Eagle grocery store is across the street from my office, and since I'm not great about bringing my lunch to work, I run over to make a salad, on average, once a week. The salad bar selections are decent, it is conveniently located (no need to walk through aisles to get to it), and usually well-stocked (on my latest visit, though - at the beginning of lunch time - there were no large containers available, and those compartmented ones are not going to cut it for me).
The sad service is what keeps this from being a preferred store for me, The times I have needed the help of an employee, I have felt like I was bothering them. The best response I have received is the aisle number of an item I was unable to locate (I subsequently searched through that aisle, and concluded that the item was not in their inventory - then went to another family-owned store a couple of miles away, where the employee walked me to the item, and then asked if he could help me find anything else). Another time, while making my way around the salad bar, another customer dropped a spoonful of veggies; the salad bar lady cleaned up behind him, spewing profanity ("Do you do this sh*t at your house?"); this was years ago, and that woman no longer works here. The worst response was (and this also was long ago) when an item would not ring up at the self-service checkout, and the employee on hand just watched and did not respond. When I asked her for help, she asked me the price of the item, and I told her I did not know (the main reason I am not the grocery shopper for our household; the mister ALWAYS looks for the best bargain, while I simply pick up what I need). Her response: "Well, what do you THINK it is?" I was dumbfounded. I told her that I honestly did not know, and she tilted her head and did a bit of an eye roll. I didn't know what to say or do. I asked her for her name (she was not wearing a name tag), and her reply was, "What are you going to do, call a manager?" Having an argument was unnecessary; this was just me and a small bag of groceries, not something upon which someone's life depended, so I just. walked. away. Went back to work, got some things done, chilled for a couple of hours, and then called to speak calmly with the manager to talk about the "incident." Poor guy said, "I am sorry, and please keep shopping here. I was transferred to this store a couple of weeks ago, and I don't know what's wrong with these people."
On my most recent visit, after putting together my salad, I decided to grab some Cape Cod popcorn (I fell in love with their sea salt and white cheddar flavors when we vacationed in Cape Cop and visited their HQ). Grabbed THREE bags, because with three, the sale price marked was $1.99 per bag instead of $3.49. At the self checkout, they rang up at regular price, so I asked the employee at the station for assistance; same result for him. I explained the signage, he said he'd need to see it, so I left my things there and went to get the tag (this time, I WANTED my groceries). He went with me, grabbed the tag, and we returned to the register. He noted that the sale price was for last week. OK, my response, how do we get them to ring up as marked? He offered to delete one of the bags. That's still not the correct price (and I would think that would mess with the store's inventory/sales records). He re-rang them manually at the advertised price, and I left happy, with salad for lunch and popcorn to last at least the afternoon. So much better than past interactions.
There are a couple of employees who are very good at what they do, and I look forward to seeing and talking with them, even if just in passing; the gentleman who corrals the shopping carts and puts them back at the entrance (whatever the Cleveland weather, that man works and greets everyone), and a woman who works the checkout area and is friendly, personable, and quick to help customers. These folks are gems, and assests for Giant Eagle.
If you shop here, be alert and aware in the parking lot; it's like a game of frogger out there. Not everyone looks before they back out of a parking space, and just like any other lot, there are folks who don't mind the stop sign, are in a big hurry to get in/out of there, or busy doing something in addition to driving.
