  • A few years back during a trip to LA, we stopped by the original Du-Pars in the Farmers Market after it was suggested to us by family. It was our first time there and we ended up just getting pancakes since they are basically "world famous". While on their own they are really really good pancakes, I could never justify going back to the LA location since there are just way too many excellent breakfast joints minutes away. So when the one in Vegas opened, I waited a while to give them a try to see if they lived up to the hype. We've now been there twice, and while the pancakes are still excellent, they just don't seem to do much else well in my eyes. Located inside the Golden Gate Casino, this Du-Par's is pretty small and tucked back into a corner. There's a small bar and seating that sits maybe 40 or so people. Both times we've been here, we've had a decent size group of 6 or more and have had to wait to be seated. This last visit brought a group of 8, and while we didn't have to wait too long, it drives me nuts seeing restaurants leave open tables throughout the place without seating people. I can only guess this falls back on their servers and other employees. More than one time during our most recent visit, the cashier basically got into arguments with customers. And for whatever reason, our original server just up and left after taking our orders so we had to switch servers in between ordering and getting our food. It was strange, but we lucked out since our second waiter was a huge improvement. Much like the original LA location, this one is pumping out some of the better pancakes you'll find, especially in Vegas. They're soft, but still have a little chew to them and I imagine that using real butter plays a huge part in making these what they are. You don't get the greasy feeling or overly doughy center that is common with a lot of breakfast joints. While I do like them and it's clear that they use higher quality ingredients, I'm a huge fan of unique and out of the box pancakes, so these just aren't the be all end all for me. Now that I've been here a couple times, I've had the opportunity to try other items and that's an area where I feel they fall short. I recently tried their corned beef hash. The $14 price-tag is to be expected in a casino, but with fairly small portions it's definitely not the best bang for your buck. Not being a huge fan of hash browns in general, I didn't care for these much, but they aren't terrible. The hash was decent, but even after ordering it extra crispy, it was still a little on the mushy side for me. I also found it strange that they don't seem to really season anything on the plate. Nothing a little bit of salt and pepper can't help. I will say I do like their fresh jams served with the toast though. I have to agree with a lot of other reviewers who suggest that Du-Par's maintains such a high average for their pancakes alone. They obviously can not correct their service issues, and other stuff on the menu doesn't seem to be anything special. Being that we're locals, we'll probably be back at some point, but even the pancakes aren't worth going out of the way for.
