| - Beautiful things, worst service ever. If you need a gift for a new baby, make sure to take your business elsewhere. Advice from a Caterpillar is just not worth the hassle.
I love the Petit Bateau sleepers, they are literally the softest articles of clothing I've ever felt. It's like the woven eyelashes of angels are caressing and snuggling your baby all day long. They are divine, but Advice from a Caterpillar is not. I received a gift of a baby outfit a size too small for my babes. I could see that it was too small as soon as I opened the gift. My friend assured me that no gift receipt was necessary - they had promised her they'd take it back, no questions asked. She also told me that they keep customer accounts with all of their purchase info - if need be, they could just look her up and check the purchase. With this in mind, babes and I made the trek to Summerhill.
On arrival, an older woman entered the store just ahead of us. She appeared to be an employee, and although I was right behind her (and it was raining), she ignored us and did not hold the door for us and our stroller. Turns out, she was indeed an employee. Inside the shop, I browsed around in search of larger Petit Bateau sizes, and found none. I asked her, and she said that I should have come sooner, they were all sold out. I then showed her my return, and asked if I could get a credit until additional Petit sizes were restocked. She looked at my return with contempt, told me it was "old stock", and probably valueless. "We'd only give you maybe $17 for this", she said, continuing on to say that she was the owner's mother, and the owner would have to get in touch with me IF they were to issue a credit. She came across as very rude, stuck up and dismissive. I told her the name of my friend who had purchased the gift, she ignored this info and told me I was better off regifting it as it really wasn't worth anything. (For the record, the item was still on AFAC website when I received the gift, at a sale price of $50. Petit Bateau sleepers typically run about $60 each, and this was an outfit, not just a sleeper.)
Frankly, I have never heard of a baby store that won't offer a return/exchange at the price paid for the item. Baby sizes can vary widely, and often the size on the tag does not accurately reflect the size of the garment. My baby is only a few months old, but she currently has clothes labelled 0-3 months that still fit, and clothes labelled 6-9 months that she has already outgrown. Baby sizes are not "standard" and it's basically impossible to insure that gifts will fit - thus retailers tend to be even more lenient with returns and exchanges. It's a necessary part of doing business in this market. Particularly at this price point, I'd expect a better return/exchange policy, and I'd definitely expect staff to have a better attitude about it.
At this point, a friend of hers walked in and started talking about a lunch date. We had not concluded our transaction, but she fully turned away from me and started talking about lunch. I put the outfit back in my bag and walked out. What a waste of time.
