Island Style is a Korean establishment masquerading as a Hawaiian restaurant masquerading as a Korean restaurant. This type of fusion fare certainly is a unique one as most Hawaiian food has a heavy Japanese influence. In the end, comfort food is amazing when prepared by people who know it best. The inviting servers here sit you down as if you had just stepped into their home. Our waitress was reminiscent of my Korean friend's mom who would feed us her home-cooked meals.
The menu is filled with some Hawaiian favorites such as spam musubi and loco moco, among others, but the other half offers Korean dishes such as mandu (Korean dumplings) and meat jun (egg-battered meat; also with a fish option). As with any Korean restaurant, the table is offered banchan and rice water tea. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the meat jun was, especially with the flavorful and tender thinly-sliced beef. If you're seeking a noodle dish, the black bean noodles were some of the best I've ever had. The eclectic food was fantastic and I can't wait to return to try the rest of the items on the menu!
