  • The PNC YMCA was my life-line throughout this year's rough winter when I was training for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. Staff at the check-in desk are friendly and good about giving out towels. The clientele at this location is understandably more adult-oriented, as it's smack in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh's business district. This Y is quite spacious, has not one, but two locker rooms. One lower level for the pool, one upper for the rest of the facilities. The upper level has a separate area for teens/kids, and both a wet and dry sauna. I took Pilates and yoga fairly regularly, which I miss, but due to the logistics of my parking situation, it makes more sense for me to go to another Y instead. I do miss it, because I especially enjoyed David's Monday night class and Valerie on Thursdays. They have different styles, and are both very good. I've never had to fight for mat space, but you may want to take advantage of the gym towels or bring your own mat, because the ones there do get pretty well worn. Most folks do seem to be good about wiping them down with the anti-bac spray, though. They also offer spinning, zumba, aerobics, plenty of "silver sneakers", etc., and at all hours of the day. When I'm not taking a class, then I typically stick to cardio at this location, so I can't comment much on the weights or the pool. There are easily about a dozen each of elliptical machines and treadmills, and about 8-10 bikes. One thing I really like about their layout is that most of the cardio machines overlook Market Square, so you can people watch as an alternative to tv. Not surprisingly, it gets busy and crowded when the suits working for PNC, BNY, UPMC, et al come over to get their sweat on, however, I've always been able to find at least some cardio machine to use, even if it's not my first choice. They seem pretty on top of the maintenance too, for the Out of Order ones don't stay that way for very long. The equipment is also fairly new--maybe a couple years old--which helps. There's also a spot for stretching and using medicine balls, foam rollers, etc. Folks are often working with a personal trainer, there, however, so just be mindful of the space. There is a small training room across from one of the studio rooms that I myself have never used, but I see people in there with medicine balls and jump ropes as well, so that might be an alternative spot to do some strength training in a semi-private area. This location also has what looks to be a pretty thriving activity program. I see flyers all the time for classes, social activities, training clubs, health & wellness programs, etc. All in all, a really prime spot if you're a working professional in Pittsburgh. Even if you work several blocks away, it's only about 2 blocks from the Wood St. T station. No excuse not to go!
