  • NOTE: 07/04/2015: After completing my official review of the DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh Airport (which is REALLY a 1 star place) I've reassessed this as a 2 star. I may have been too irritated by the check-in fiasco, but that doesn't justify the excessive hit. Its still not worth it, IMO, but definitely not as bad as other places in the area. Average hotel (probably would get a 3 star) but deducting one star for the cigarette smoke issue (see later) and one star for a plenty serving of nasty attitude from the young check-in desk guy. I'd describe this place best as a old pair of worn out slippers worn by an ex-smoker! Stayed here for a business trip and to be clear - would not again. Its close enough to airport and to the Robinson/Settlers Ridge business district. Restaurants etc are close. Bad start to the experience because my room had inadvertently been cancelled. To be clear, the check-in desk helped get me into another room (it was a busy week) but with plenty of attitude. Yeah, he solved my problem but lets face it - its your screw up, so don't play the old martyr routine while you fix the issue you created. Its a little worn down. Sort of like being in a 90's time warp. May well have been a couple of decades since it was refurbished. I think Hilton bought the in-room sofa from the landlord who rented me a boarding room during my final year at Penn U in the late 90's - it was so rough, it could in fact be that same exact sofa!!! If you've never stayed at this type of Embassy suite the first time will be weird. There's sort of an internal courtyard with the room balcony's facing towards it. Hmmmmm, its tough to explain so google a few pics and you'll understand better what I mean - I've stayed at a few Embassy Suites with the exact same layout. The courtyard at this place is best described as worn, dull and uninviting. The room itself? Dark and depressing as the overall interior. It is generally just a depressing place unfortunately and I didn't like it. Really felt some of the nooks and passageways in this place are so unlighted and vacant that I'd be worried about my own personal safety (if I wasn't 6' and 250 lbs of beef). The fish pond is nice, but might be dangerous if you have kids since it is unguarded. They'll give you food to feed the carp though. The smoke issue is the big problem here frankly, and it may be a show stopper for some. Unfortunately there's a permeating smokey atmosphere to the place, there are obviously some rooms where they allow smokers but either the ventilation isn't working or they have some other issue and the whole place just has that musty smoker aroma. This may be just detectable by some depending upon sensitivity but I noticed that other people have commented. I definitely picked it up as soon as I walked towards my room. Its like visiting a bar and afterwards the cigarettes that others smoked were lingering on you. Frankly speaking, they need to take a hard decision and either spend the $$$ to get their ventilation issues resolved or simply ban smoking on the premises. Until then - I recommend non-smokers give it a pass (it triggers migraine for me). Really disappointed with Hilton on this and would not stay again, there are much better options in the area.
