| - I've been to the pub side of Union Station a number of times, and it's okay. This place used to be Wolfman's Pub, a dive-y crap shack from the 80's filled with VLTs, the stench of stale smoke and cheap beer.
The selection of draft beer is good, and in the usual range for imports. Note that their Guinness pint is SMALLER than standard, at 17 oz. instead of 20 oz. for $7.25. The service is friendly, but of the short-skirt/low-top variety, similar to what you get at Melrose. In fact, a recent visit featured a server who was overtly flirty with my friend and I, not because she liked the cut of our jib, but because we weren't pounding a pint every 20 minutes and she was hunting for a big tip. Anyway...
The food is average. Not as good as the Garrison Pub or OJ's or even Moxies. They do good appies, with a decent plate of nachos [order the full size for $16, as the half size is kinda small]. The pizza is okay as well. The sandwiches and burgers are pretty average pub fare. The side salad varies a bit - I think they are searching for a good one. The fries are standard. Strange thing - they don't serve ketchup with their food. You get a carrier basket thing with steak sauce, cutlery, two types of mustard and some hot sauce, but no ketchup. If you ask for ketchup, they bring out a small portion - eventually. The fries do not stand alone - they need some help. So do the burgers for that matter. The longest I've waited for ketchup was 10 minutes, which was kinda nuts.
The decor is quite nice, kit-pub finishes with site-specific touches. The owners made an effort, and it shows. Washrooms are clean and sized appropriately. The music varies, with everything from 80s and 90s hits to current radio-friendly rock. When a Flames game is on, you won't be able to hear anything else.
Overall, Union Station is a decent place. Nothing stands out, which is okay. If you want to grab a few beers and watch the game, it's one of the best places in the Marda Loop area.
