I have had the pleasure of doing this hike 3 times in the last few months. I just love this hike for it's beauty and amazing history. It is an easy hike/walk that takes you past Lake Mead and then though the railroad tunnels built in 1931 for the Hoover Dam construction. Passing through the tunnels knowing that years ago trains rolled through them is really a unique experience.
The views of Lake Mead are stunning. On our first trip we had the pleasure of seeing a Big Horn just hanging out near one of tunnels. We got to observe him for several minutes before he took off down the side of the mountain. It made the day even more special. Along the hike are billboards with some great information on the Tunnel construction, wildlife and life during the tunnel construction.
The hike starts at the Lake Mead Recreation Area parking lot. There is a bathroom there and there is also a bathroom midway along the hike. This makes it really a great hike as the facilities offered are strategically placed. The path is mostly flat and somewhat rocky. It is a wide path so despite the bike folks passing by there is plenty of room for all. You can bring your furry friends but be aware they are not allowed on the Hoover Dam.
The hike ends at the Parking Lot Structure for the Hoover Dam. You wind through a concrete sidewalk to finally end up on the upper level of the parking structure. You can then take the stairs of elevator down to walk on the Dam. We always stop at the Snack stand across from the bathrooms for a drink and mandatory pretzel.
After walking the Dam you can head back and branch off to walk across the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Bridge. This is a great view of the Dam and Colorado River. It also adds to the hike and your amazing outdoor workout. A wild across the bridge takes you into Arizona so it makes your hike a cross state adventure.
If you haven't done the Railroad Tunnel Trail Hike I highly recommend it. It is a great way to spend a morning. It takes around 3 1/2 to 4 hours depending on the add-ons (walking the Dam and or Bridge). I like to go in the early morning to avoid the crowds as it can be busy in the colder months.
