| - The Marble Slab Creamery
330 Yonge Street
Yonge-Dundas Square
***
The Marble Slab is located in the vicinity of Yonge & Dundas Square. I had walked by many times but never been a customer - finally I made it in to see what it was all about.
They have a variety of different flavours ranging from the common Strawberry to the not-so-common Amaretto. A small will set you back $4.49 for one scoop, but each comes with 1 topping and a vanilla waffle cone, so I suppose at the end of the day its not really "overpriced." If you were to tack on a waffle cone at Laura Secord or Baskin Robbins I'm sure the price would be about that. A small = 1 scoop. A variety of ice cream cakes are also available for purchase. You may also want to try one of their Tasty Creations, Sundaes or Milkshakes!
We ended up ordering the Cookies 'n Cake, which is basically their Sweet Cream ice cream, with cookie dough, and Oreo cookies. We also added pecans to the mix because my dining companion adores pecans.
I ordered the Amaretto for myself with slivered almonds, a perfect accompaniment for the box of Carlsbad Oblatten Vanilla-Almond wafers that I had delightfully pillaged from Winners. If you've never had one of these babies, you should try one!
If you want to upgrade to one of their premium waffle cones (dipped in: white chocolate, skor bar, chocolate etc), it is an additional $0.99.
Service is really slow for a variety of reasons.
1. They scoop out your ice cream and weigh it on a scale.
2. They then take your ice cream to the "marble slab" and "knead it" with the ice cream scoop and another flat utensil with the topping of your choice to mix it altogether.
3. The same girl who serves you has to ring you out at the register.
Verdict:
I found the actual ice cream itself was a no-jokes, full-cream, full-fat, "heavy" ice cream compared to the likes of Greg's, Ed's Real Scoop, and Summer's Sweet Memories. I also found the waffle cone to be a tad much on the sweetness factor. It pushes the already "heavy" ice cream treat into a whole new level of indulgence!
You can never go wrong with ice cream, however, Ed's Real Scoop remains the champion of ice creameries that I've experienced in Toronto.
