| - Ok, anyone that knows much about me knows I get a little fired up about zoos and the animals being in small enclosures, etc. However, I'm also realistic. I realize that sometimes the best isn't always ideal (I also know that a lot of zoos don't even provide their best).
That being said, I actually liked this zoo for what it was. It's a free admission zoo so I didn't expect much from the start. I expected animals being caged like circus animals or chain link fences and dried up exhibits.
Not the case! Yeah, it's small. But they've packed in a lot of small enhancements that go a long way! It's perfect for kids as their indoor facilities (rainforest, reptiles, etc.) are complete with educational activities, etc.
The size of the zoo itself is a little small, but it was perfect for us. With a three year old, we really don't want to spend all day long out in the heat going through a zoo.
It's well kept, and while some of the exhibits ARE a bit small for some of the particular animals, they are kept clean and are set up in a way that would be more comfortable for each animal.
For the "human" enhancement, you might expect to have to pay hefty fees to make up for the no admission. Again, NOT the case! Concessions are well below what I expected and the activities that do require payment (train ride, carousel, etc.) are minimal fees at best. The gift shop is about what you'd expect at any zoo; t-shirts, hats, stuffed animals, books, etc. and everything is priced reasonably.
I'm not sure how they keep their doors open, but if I ever make it up to Madison again, it'll definitely be on our list of things to do... again!
