| - It's become almost a cliche that young people mention that "Having Porter is one of the best things about Toronto". I'm starting to think that this is part of the airline's planned PR campaign push to 'increase word of mouth' ... because it's oh so prevalent.... and quite honestly not that true.
As it is, Porter airlines is an excellent metaphor for the city of Toronto.
It looks nice, is relatively boring and inoffensive, aims at the lowest common denominator, offers minimal service amenities and is in-fact a complete over-promise.
Everything looks perfect at first glance. For example, our flight attendant was quite pretty. On further inspection, it turns out that she was the ideal combination of very pretty and very mean.... an automaton with free cookies. Completely disinterested in having any conversation with passengers, mindless glare of disinterest on her face as she tried to figure out the perils of modern life.
After flying a fair bit with these people over the past year, I have two conclusions. The flights are almost always late and and almost always half full. I guess that these both help strengthen the airline's argument for the city to build a landlink to the island ("But we had to wait for the ferry" or "We have sooooo many departures")
Without a doubt, the worst thing about Porter is the passengers who fly on Porter. Delusional fuckwits who feel the need to tell you "This is way better than Air Canada" at every opportunity. That's like saying that Arsenic tastes better than Cyanide. These people feel a need to remind you of the "amazing convenience" as you're stuck waiting for a pointless ferry-ride-to-nowhere.
I spent half my flight last night creating a slideshow about 'Unicorns and their spectacular magic powers" just to get the asshole sitting beside me to stop staring at my screen.
Plenty of the things that Porter does makes me upset. LIke the way that they let their flight crew breeze through customs while everyone else has to wait for the two border guards to drudge through the line of human filth.
"But it's Toronto's own airline! We're a world class city!" Oh, come on. LOTS of small regional centers have small airlines based in them. Ask the kind people of Milwaukee about Midwest Express.... or the folks in Kansas City about failed ventures like Vanguard.
I really liked Porter when it started up. It was simple, uncomplicated and amazing. I can't realistically say that it's still the same.
