  • I continue to be a devotee of Hofbrahaus despite not being a beer-drinker. Who cares about mead when such items as the titanically flavorful vessel of breaded, fried pork called the Schnitzel Sandwich are on the bill of fare? The lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles and bier cheese only compliment the flap of crisp, succulent pork held tightly within a Kaiser roll, making the foreign familiar and universal. The yinzer in me I had half a mind to ask for slaw and frites on top. Instead, the fabulous, dead-perfect Belgian-style tuber sticks came as a side. I thought I tasted lard, which is always a good thing when devouring deep-fried foods. The ultimate potato pancakes can also be had at Hofbrahaus. As thick as hamburger patties, they crackle like kettle chips on the outside, yet are plush, muggy, and starchy like au gratin spuds on the inside. So tasty were they, that I almost ignored the sour cream and applesauce that accompanied these precious, oily, crispy, shareable starters. One must also consider the carnally creamy, benevolently bacon-laden comfort food tour-de-force that is the Hofbrauhaus Hot Brown...or Turkey Devonshire. No matter. You, the reader, the eater of good food, deserve such pleasures in an increasingly maddening world. And dessert...praise Thor for dessert! This time it would be the black monolith known as The Chocolate Stout Cake that would terrify my taste buds. Imbibed with yeasty, beastly, beery essences, the wedge of decadent darkness consisted of a frighteningly fudgy, dense body and an airy chocolate mousse frosting straight from Niflheim. Is it touristy, ktschy, Epcot-ish? I am not concerned. The food makes its own statement, and that statement comes down bold like Mjolnir smiting mountains. P.S. The service was terrific overall, and considering the restaurant had just opened for the day, we almost had it all to ourselves for most of our early lunch. P.P.S. As Kay, her parents, and I gorged ourselves on the Teutonic delicacies, a gentleman in olden Germanic attire serenaded us with his accordion. Unfortunately, he knew no Blind Guardian songs. P.S. The Hot Brown and the Chocolate Stout cake were specials and are not listed on the website's menu.
