  • The Sunday evening before Memorial Day, I went to St Rose Animal Urgent Care. After checking in and having my dog taken to the back Dr Owens blew into the room telling me "I'm just here to educate you" and "Whether you like it or not" you need to know all of these issues with my dog. This was in regard to other issues of a newly adopted dog that was there for an emergency after swallowing a too big treat whole. She was gagging and vomiting. What I was "being educated" about was not the reason why we were there. Dr Owens had a defensive tone. He was accusatory like I've neglected this newly adopted pup telling me all the things wrong with her without addressing the emergency reason we were there, other than Educating me that I shouldn't give her such big treats, she's only 7.5 lbs. He made me cry. At which point he seemed even more defensive and couldn't grasp why I was so upset. This was a very stressful event to begin with. A little compassion would have gone a long way. After that unfortunate discussion, the purple haired tech comes in and tells me that the "Hospital has to send X-rays out to be read. To radiologists who read X-rays all day long. That's all they do is read X-rays" -she said this at lest 5 times in a 5 minute conversation. It sounded like a rehearsed line. That's an additional $150 charge and hour long wait above the $240 for X-ray and additional $50 for handling for a third party to see that my dog swallowed a treat that was too big and it was lodged in her esophagus. I would hope the doctor would be able to see that. And that is where I put my faith. Dr. Owens may have made me cry but I knew he was capable of reading an X-ray. It was requested of me to do full wellness exam when we came there for an emergency. Blood work, urinalysis, electrolytes, full new pet panel at emergency prices, hardly urgent care prices. Estimating a total over $750 for something they couldn't even do anything about. I declined all but X-ray. After X-ray was complete and it was determined that they could do nothing for my dog. Dr Owens was much kinder and explained the next steps to me very clearly. Maybe my horrible day landed on his bad day. Regardless, I will not be going there again. If I have an emergency I will go to VECC. No in between place who couldn't do what was necessary. They wasted 1.5 hours of time getting my dog to ER and added an additional $350 to the $2000+ total at emergency for endoscopic removal of treat on a Sunday of a holiday weekend. Lastly, when all the records were sent to VECC they didn't have the correct name of my dog. There's nothing that makes me feel more uncared for than your doctor not knowing the name your patient.
