| - TERRIBLE customer service at the front desk. This place CLEARLY doesn't care about recruiting new members! Guess business must be SO GOOD that they don't have to care about attracting new members. I went into this gym today for the very first time to check out their selection of elliptical machines. I told the lady on duty at the front desk that I was shopping for a new gym. She said I would have to fill out an information card and ushered me to the back of the counter to fill it out so that I wouldn't be in the way of members coming into the club and getting their key cards scanned, etc. I filled out the information and waited for her to come back for me... and waited... and waited. Finally, I took my card back to the front of the counter and gave it to her. SHE DIDN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE ME FROM A FEW MINUTES BEFORE and asked how she could help me. I handed her my completed card and asked if I could just take a quick look around at their elliptical machines. She said I would have to wait for her manager, and he was "busy" with someone else right then. I asked if I really could not just walk around by myself and she said no, not without someone escorting me. She and 2 other staff members were folding towels at the front desk and chit-chatting about who was going to make the next pot of coffee, so I asked a bit peevishly if there was really no other staff member in the entire club who could take me around, and she LAUGHED in my face - didn't answer my question, just LAUGHED at me and continued to chit-chat with the other employees and fold her towels.
At one point while I continued to wait, she asked if I had ever been to a gym before. Seriously. I said, "Uh, do you mean another Mountainside Fitness?" and she said, "No, I mean, just any gym. Have you ever been to any gym before?" Uh... was I on a hidden camera show? I narrowed my eyes and really fixed her with a look and said, "Uh, yeah, I've been to a gym before. I am shopping for a new gym right now, I believe I mentioned that to you when I first came in." She laughed in my face again. I really thought that, since this was a smaller, more independently-owned gym instead of a corporate franchise type of thing like an LA Fitness or a 24 Hour, they would provide MUCH better customer service, polished professionals who would try a little harder to recruit new business. Boy, was I wrong.
After nearly 5 minutes of standing around, and the lady telling me TWICE to take a seat, I just went right over to the manager who was still "busy" with someone else and asked if I really could not just walk around and look at elliptical machines. He said that was fine. (So, 2 different stories from 2 different employees - also not a great sign of what kind of service I can expect if I was stupid enough to become a member.) I looked around and wasn't terribly impressed with what I saw - all elliptical machines were the exact same model, all cardio machines were right on top of each other, so you would be working out shoulder-to-shoulder with other patrons, teeny tiny little floor area to do floor exercises. I walked out the door and no one - not even the lady who was sooooooo concerned about me walking around by myself - bothered to say goodbye or wish me a happy new year, or even come after me and ask if there was anything they could do to earn my business as a member.
