I grow up in Charlotte, nearly a native. So Repo has been a staple. I bought Radiohead's first album back in 1993. Back then they were originally located on Central Ave. They disappeared for a little while and then at some point they reopened in a new location. I usually buy my records at Lunch Box which is great but can be limited in selection. So I recently went back to Repo. At first I was amazed at their diversity in records. A great selection of Soul, Jazz, Punk, pretty much anything. I spent about 2 hour in there my first time back. I picked up some great records that I otherwise wouldn't.
Despite the great records, I get a bad vibe from them after about 5 minutes in there. A elderly couple came in with a large box of old records to sell. They manager/owner of the Repo told separated what he would buy and what he wouldn't. The couple then asked what they could do with they remaining ones. The owner said they could take them to GoodWill or The Salvation Army or that he knows an artist that makes art out of discarded records. Then out of nowhere then owner says "She's a liberal, but I don't hold that against her." That though me for a loop! I was stunned that a owner of a record store would express his political views to a potential customer. I went ahead and made my purchase despite my reservations.
Then next time I went in there I brought my girlfriend with me. We shopped around for a while and found some good stuff. While shopping we noticed a number of collectibles on the shelves above the records. Some neat novelties like old school lunch boxes and action figures. But what really stood out was a number of Donald Trump items. One of which was the infamous "Make America Great Again" caps. Once again I was puzzled as to why any smart business person would bring political views into your business. Why alienate a huge group of potential customers. Is liberal money no good to you. Apparently so. Not to mention no one there was very friendly or engaging at all.
So with that being said, I plan on taking my liberal money elsewhere. In a way I'm glad for his transparency. I'm all for supporting local business, but at least this way I know who I would be supporting. I'm making America great again by not supporting your intolerant business model.
