  • After my first spin class about a decade ago, I vowed never, ever, to take another spin class. And I kept that vow until a few weeks ago. What possessed me to do a 180 and give it a go? As it turns out, I decided to commit to a bike event in a few months and since I have not been doing any cardio of any sort, I knew I needed to train so I wouldn't be stuck in the middle of Mexico for the event. With a newly purchased road bike and 100 degree weather, I also knew that it would be a good idea to use the gym I had been neglecting for years. I dutifully paid $18/month but never really made use of this gym. In fact, I was on the verge of canceling when I figured I'd better start going to spin class. A few weeks ago I went in so green but the teacher, Suzanne, was great and helped me get the bike adjusted and explained how my body should be sitting on the stationary bike. Class was hard as expected, but good. I had gone to 2 classes and already felt a little difference. Today I went on a different day and the teacher was Mandy. With Mandy, I felt like she was more of a trainer because she explained a bit more of the "why" we were doing things and making sure to mention hand and body positioning, which I liked. We'd go back to our individual base gear to flush out the legs after a climbing gear or sprint. "Keep the elbows in, hips back; push with the heel", etc. Both instructors kept us on track as far of rpm target, when to increase or decrease gears, and have a nice energy about them. As of this writing, Suzanne has a Wed 9:30am class, while Mandy does a Tues 9:00am class. I've heard it said to "Start before you're ready." I'm doing exactly that and am enjoying the process of getting myself ready!
