| - Tucked away at the corner of Birchmount and Huntingwood, Gondola Hair Design is a gem. After a couple months of leaving my hair to be, I really wanted a fast haircut to cut away split ends, damaged ends, and just clean it up with a trim. However, since I attend university in Kingston, I was very skeptical with finding a regular hairstylist in Toronto - as I'm hardly in the city for more than 4 months for the summer.
After reading a ton of reviews on Yelp, I decided to go to Gondola. It's close to home and seemed quaint. I called, and was able to get an appointment at 4PM with Andy; Tina was super nice on the phone, asked me what I wanted during the cut, and promptly scheduled me in. When I got there, I was quickly greeted, and my appointment started exactly at my scheduled time. Although Andy was comfortable speaking English, I decided to speak Cantonese with him, which really made the conversation flow pretty nicely. We didn't have any hum drum nonsense chit chat, and he genuinely asked me about my work, school, and all the other stuff.
THE ACTUAL HAIR CUTTING EXPERIENCE
I warned him about my two cartilage piercings on my right ear (hairstylists tend to get a comb caught in there once or twice) and said I wanted to keep the length of my hair, but cut off the damaged ends. I decided to be liberal and mention that I would be comfortable going shorter, if he recommended it.
He complimented me on my healthy roots, and was very thorough in checking our the condition of my hair, from ends to tips. He repeatedly checked through washing, cutting, and blow-drying. He gave his professional opinion on my damaged ends, which I appreciated because it told me he was really paying attention to my hair. i.e. He said my previously dyed hair ends would damage more quickly, and he could see the ends tangling, but he reassured me and said he would be able to clean it up very nicely.
The haircut took around 40 minutes, which is what I expected it to be. It was very clear he was taking his time in going through my hair, and ensuring it was straight, split end free, and flowing. He did mention that he was not able to cut off all damaged parts (previously dyed hair parts), because my hair would be too short afterwards. However he did say that this was not a big deal at all, and that I would be able to clean it up my next cut.
ALL IN ALL, it was a great experience. Although I did mention he was unable to cut off all my previously dyed hair (which I never expected him to, anyway), my hair still flows very nicely and I can still tie it up, which is the length I desired. He also gave me a no-nonsense haircut - I do not have to straighten it, fancy it up, or do anything extra to keep it neat. Andy was quick, professional, and I could tell he genuinely cared about the service he provided. Even Tina was polite, and introduced herself, even as she was working with another client. My haircut ended up being $28, tax included (cash only) - which really isn't a bad price for the expertise I got with Andy. I would happily go here again for a trim! 5 out of 5 stars.
