| - I'd been drooling over the delicious-sounding menu for ages, and I'm happy to report that Pan delivered on food, service, and especially drinks.
My husband and I visited on a Sunday for a late lunch. It was around 2 when we arrived, so wasn't very busy (which suits us just fine), but as we were leaving the place began to fill up a bit. The patio looked lovely, but unfortunately it was a little too chilly to enjoy it. Inside the restaurant is really nice too, with a very "lounge" vibe that was quite romantic. The dining room features an open kitchen and sushi bar, which was a nice touch, but not obtrusive.
Pan offers a weekend happy hour from 12 to 3 so we were excited to try some half-price cocktails. I tried the Plumhattan first, and it was PHENOMENAL. One of the best cocktails I've ever had. Pepper and plum flavors go together so well-- who knew?! I'd definitely pay the full price of around $10, but at happy hour prices it was a steal. The waitress/hostess/bartender thoughtfully warned me that the drink contained a candied plum with a pit, which I appreciated. Later I ordered the 5 spice Sazerac which, while obviously not traditional, maintained the spirit of the classic cocktail. So good and so strong.
The food menu was a new fall menu which differed slightly from the one I'd been perusing online. But I was thrilled to see the Drunken Noodles had been replaced with "Pan" See Ew, probably my favorite Thai dish. The menu is small, but very appealing. We started with tempura vegetables, which was a large portion of a wide variety of veggies, including green beans, peppers, taro (I think), and best of all, shiitake mushrooms (again, I think they were shiitake). The dipping sauce was great, they were perfectly battered, and perfectly cooked.
My Pan See Ew was awesome as well. A HUGE portion of wide rice noodles, or just "fat noodles" as I affectionately call them, with chicken, broccoli, egg, more awesome mushrooms, onions, and a sweet soy sauce. My husband loved his Korean fried chicken plate, a dish that I'd never heard of but that he had enjoyed with Korean friends. Again the portion was very large, with large pieces of boneless chicken in an addictive sweet, spicy, vinegary sauce, and kimchi and seaweed salad. He said it tasted as he remembered it, and really enjoyed the kimchi also. I will say that all of our food was quite salty, slightly more so than even other soy-sauce-heavy places. I personally like salty food, but if you don't, you may want to be aware.
This review is already way too long, sorry, but I do want to mention that our server was great. She was doing several jobs at once, as it wasn't a busy time, but did them all extremely well. She seemed happy to be there, as did the chef and sushi chef, which goes such a long way to creating an enjoyable dining experience. I'm really looking forward to a return trip!
