  • During a recent long weekend trip to Charlotte, we tried all the South End breweries and although Lenny Boy had the BEST customer service of any of the other breweries, it was my least favorite. Not that it wasn't good, it was just MUCH smaller then the rest and can feel every overwhelming when it's crowded [as it was during our visit on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm or 4pm]. Since the actual tap room is small, it can get very noisy when crowded and seats are taken up quickly. I think there's a lot of potential to do some type of parking lot picnic benches to draw people outside, but as of yet, they have no outside seating (they DO have a massive parking lot though!) Lenny Boy is doing one thing different then the rest of the local breweries, they're brewing komucha, a non-alcoholic lightly effervescent fermented drink brewed with sweetened black/green tea. It is produced by fermenting the tea using bacteria and yeast. I stuck with beer on my visit and was impressed. The FYIPA and Herb's Pale Ale were great. The bartender also recommended we try a combination beer they had brewed with NODA called Bockquinox. While I'm usually not a fan of lagers, this Indian Pale Lager was the best of the beers I tried. Overall, Lenny Boy delivers tasty beers but has a ways to go with an inviting atmosphere, which is surprisingly important for a brewery these days [too much competition]. They've got a handful of boardgames and decks of cards and I also like their tap handle that serves up water (hopefully they can get the water chilled in the future). Clean bathrooms and friendly bartenders make for a pleasant experience but with so much competition in the direct area, I'm not sure they'd be a destination spot; but very easy to walk to from Sycamore or Triple C Brewery.
