| - So impressed! A bit lengthy here but hopefully helpful to others. Last year we bought a 20 year old home, with two original Trane single-stage HVAC heat pump (all electric) systems. The seller replaced one using Scottsdale Air and a Lennox two-stage system. We love it, cools fast, quietly, flawlessly- one minor install issue arose with the cabinet, which was quickly handled professionally and cheerfully by the owner and one of his craftsmen. We felt it time to replace the other, and since it was still working, we had the luxury of getting multiple bids. We used Yelp, Angies List, word of mouth and our favorite big-box store to narrow down the hundreds of a/c contractors, and did extensive research on the equipment. It isn't a small investment.
Between July and September 2017, we were visited by salesmen of six companies, providing a total of 25 bids involving variations in manufacturers, product lines, size and type of equipment. The quotes ranged from $5,176 for an off-brand single-stage (one speed) version, to $13,293 for a larger-than-needed Lennox variable speed system. We narrowed to Trane and Lennox- I concluded that "off brands" (such as American Standard) made by the big 3 or 4 appear might not be the same product, possibly using more parts made overseas. Even within their own product lines, Trane and Lennox each seem to have several levels of quality. The noise output was also of importance to us, as the existing unit was audible while we were in the backyard in warmer weather and if near a window in our guest bedroom.
We further narrowed to variable-speed, though more costly for install and repair. We are pleased with that choice- settling on the Lennox Signature Line (XP-25). Incredibly efficient, quiet, paired with the right air handler provides noticeably cleaner air and humidity control, with a great control panel accessible from our smart phones (another story- we replaced a "Nest"- which had a mind of its own, no matter how programmed). We love the XP-25! Certainly this technology doesn't come cheap.
HVAC installs seem to cost more around Phoenix than in some other parts of the country, not much we could do about it. We never heard back from 3 of the 6 contractors who gave us bids, several with high Yelp rankings. Interesting that Scottsdale Air doesn't show up in the top 10 if searching HVAC/Scottsdale- perhaps because their main shop is in Tempe (I never had to go there). They are not a tiny operation, and they are obviously well managed. Let me say that Scottsdale Air's pricing put the 5 other contractors to shame. Their salesman never exerted high-pressure, but did send updated quotes to my email as manufacturer rebates and other conditions changed, and never tried to upsell us on a larger system, ducting or other things a few of the others discussed. They were able to professionally install a Lennox Signature Series variable speed XP-25 for net cost to us less than the big box contractor's two-stage XP-16. Though part of this was a manufacturer's and APS rebate- we have received both of those as promised, though we didn't know that Lennox provides its rebates in the form of a VISA gift card.
The quality of install is important. This is hard to judge by talking to the salesmen who measure your home and give you the quotes. The workmanship is critical when changing from an older system, as the refrigerant has been revamped, and problems can arise if the old chemical isn't completely purged from the lines that run underground. Another issue is placing the outside equipment- our yard is surrounded by a wall, and getting a 300 pound piece of precision equipment from the street, over that wall is hard. Only Scottsdale Air offered to use a "spider-crane", an impressive piece of modern equipment to lift the old unit out and put the new unit in, with little chance of damaging anything in the process. Each of the other 5 refused to use a spider crane- either because they didn't own one or didn't want to pay $250 or so to rent one. They all proposed using an outside vendor with a full size crane pulled into the front driveway (pavers), then lift the units over the roof (and here, over solar panels), through trees and into the small install area. No thank-you.
Once I put 50% down (VISA), Scottsdale Air scheduled the install for the following week, arrived promptly and professionally completed the work in one day. Fantastic! Scottsdale Air followed up the following week to see if there were any concerns with the system or its programming, and only then collected the balance. Obviously, we pay close attention to detail, so don't hand out glowing recommendations too lightly. If you are replacing HVAC, I am confident that you will not be disappointed by the pricing or work offered by Scottsdale Air- they have easily earned our very highest recommendation!
