This review is certainly written in pain but it is the honest truth to my experience recently with Alta Vista in regards to my very ill dog. On a Friday I took my dog for a geriatric exam. I warned the vet assistant that my dog was very temperamental to touch and that a muzzle was a good idea. The vet assistant was so timid she was afraid to go near him and had no idea how the muzzle worked. Her attempts aggravated my dog more and I ended up putting the muzzle on him myself even though the sign says for pet owners to step away while the staff work. I agreed to have my pet looked at in the back as I knew more staff was needed to assist. Dr. Ballard finally came into the room and gave some brief suggestions as to the breathing problems I had reported as his symptoms. She indicated that my dog would not allow her to touch him. I completely understood this as this was his demeanor for a long while. She suggested an X-ray. Unfortunately my dog was so obstinate; they were unable to get a clear view. Dr. Ballard suggested we try again another time and to call her with an update within the week. The best part of this experience was the hospital not charging for the X-ray which I thanked them for as this was not their fault that they could not get a clear view. On Saturday, his condition worsened so I gave a call to speak to Dr. Ballard. The office staff indicated she would not be able to return my call until the following Thursday. I indicated he was worsening but no offer was made to have another doctor call me back. I asked for Dr. Ballard to call me then on Thursday. Sunday I called again as his breathing was worse. No other doctor was offered to me again by the office staff. They did suggest I come in to apply for a credit they offered as I could not afford extensive testing. I went in on Sunday night, spoke to Michael who said he would leave my file with management to have someone call me with some suggestions for some less expensive testing. My dog passed away in my home early Monday morning. I called Alta Vista several times through the night; a young man does answer during off hours but NEVER recommended any all-night emergency care. I know other vet hospitals do. When they opened I reached the front office and spoke to the rudest, uncaring young lady named Val. I am appalled that someone working at a vet hospital could be so disrespectful. I told her my dog passed at home and I was uncertain what to do. She simply said "bring him in" I said I didn't understand how I could just come walking in the front door of their facility with a deceased dog in my arms. She answered by saying, "well just give us a call when you are in the parking lot" I realize I was very emotional BUT there was no empathy, no sorry for your loss, nothing. I obtained the number of the service Alta Vista uses for cremation and called them myself without using the middle man of Alta Vista. It is now over a week later. I never got a call from Dr. Ballard to follow up, I never got a call from management as promised. I will NEVER set foot in this business again despite several wonderful doctors I encountered in the past including their holistic vet. Losing a pet is bad enough but poor service from all aspects of your veterinary hospital is unacceptable. PALS, the cremation company, were fantastic, caring and even sent me a sympathy card. Alta Vista failed on every level of care for my pet.
