| - This place is a snobby-chocolate lover's heaven. It's hard to think of myself as lucky to be a Torontonian sometimes, what with our flat (rather boring) terrain, and not being near the ocean for fresh fish... but... Soma definitely makes Toronto a better place for any foodie.
This is serious chocolate. Not Hershey's or Laura Secord or Lindt. If you know the difference between snobby chocolate and filler chocolate, then you will love enjoying the subtle, unique flavours you can find here.
They carry some of the great bean-to-bar makers like Domori and others. But they make their own microbatch bars and creations, which is mostly what they sell. They have their own truffles, confections, hot chocolate drinks, gelato, and sorbet.
I've tried their Dark Side of the Mug hot chocolate... and wow. This stuff is amazingly good. You wind up with little bits of chocolate in your mug that don't dissolve, which creates a really pleasurable texture and results in a powerful taste of chocolate. I can't remember which other hot chocolate drinks I've had here, but they were all wonderful.
I've also had their gelato, which is awesome and which I happily ate despite the fact that it was winter at the time!
Their dark chocolate bars have always been my prime objective for going here, and they were always successful, no matter which I had (and I've had all of them). The bars, as far as I can recall, always have a very smooth, buttery mouthfeel to them and complex flavours. Basically I've never met a Soma chocolate bar I didn't love.
They have some tables to sit down at, so you can enjoy your drink or gelato or whatever you've chosen--or possibly all of the above--while you get to watch through their glass windows as they make chocolate. It's a great atmosphere, albeit somewhat loud and crowded most of the times I've been here. You can't be surprised about that, considering that the deliciousness someone can find here is no longer a secret to the rest of Toronto.
