  • Taco Guild seems to focus more on style than substance. The building itself is beautiful. I love restaurants that are inside old houses, so a restaurant in an old church is right up my alley. I admit I was confused by the decor choice of having Dutch paintings in a taco restaurant and Johnny Cash playing on the jukebox, but once I got past that odd juxtaposition, I decided I liked it. The giant chandelier is amazing, the bar is gorgeous, the stained glass is really pretty, etc, etc. The food however, was the opposite of all the complimentary words in the previous sentence. I like fancy tacos. The tacos here are overpriced and extremely basic, despite all the frou-frou words on the menu describing them. The prices are extremely high for the amount of food you get. For $3.95 each (some are even $4.95 with more "premium" ingredients,) you receive basically four bites of taco. I don't mind paying almost $4 for a taco, but when I'm shelling out, I expect the taco shell to be filled out, if you catch my drift. My al pastor taco at Taco Guild arrived at my plate with a meager amount of pork and some sad looking pickled onions. Allegedly there was pineapple and jalapeno bacon as well, but I didn't notice either. I also ordered the coffee braised beef taco, which strangely had loads more meat on it than the al pastor, but was really lacking in flavor. The meat was dry and the cotija cheese was kind of an odd accompaniment. My dining companions both really enjoyed their chicken tacos, so perhaps I just made the wrong choice or they have bad taste. The free chips were my favorite thing about the meal. They were really good!! Lightly salted, not greasy at all, and served warm. The salsa was eh, but oh, I ate LOTS of those chips. Service-wise, we were greeted and seated immediately, our server was attentive, and we were thanked numerous times as we left the restaurant. Essentially I enjoyed everything about our experience except the food, which should really be the core of one's restaurant experience. I'd maybe come back here for a drink, because the bar and interior atmosphere is truly very cool. For a good fancy taco that is worth the upcharge, go to Gallo Blanco or even America's Taco Shop. Still pricy for street tacos, but definitely higher quality filler than you'll get at Taco Guild.
