When I start to miss NY deli food, I head to Smallman St. Deli. It isn't the same, but it's not bad. They make as good a pastrami sandwich and cup of matzo ball soup as you can find without driving for several hours, but it lacks the intensity of experience of a serious NY are deli; the kid taking your order or making your sandwich has probably never even tasted pastrami, whereas it's close to religion in NY and the sandwich maker might well have been making such sandwiches since before you were born. Thus it is about halfway between Katz's and Subway.
