  • After coming out of an overly hot restaurant on the first summer-like night of the season, this place was a sight for sore eyes, despite the lineup out the door. So... hot night, cold ice cream - makings of a 5-star experience right there! Here's the issue: when we got to the counter, there were three young women who were providing very friendly service to customers. My teenage daughter ordered her two scoops of sorbet in a cup. My teenage son asked for his flavour and was told that they had run out, so he chose another and got it in a waffle cone. Now it was my turn: although one woman was dealing with us, a middle-aged man, who was clearly the manager, if not the owner, asked me what I wanted, even though he was in the midst of creating a waffle cone (he was actually holding it and was not in a position to help). My request of a caramel sundae with a certain flavour was met with "we don't have that flavour, but we have every other one." (NOTE: it was a different flavour than my son's first choice). Anyway, while I was re-pondering the flavours, the young woman who had helped my son and daughter asked me if she could help. Her "boss" then jumped in and very publicly and rudely said something to the effect of, "No one will get served if four of us are serving this guy." The young woman was a bit flustered, but to her credit stayed composed. This guy then took one of her colleagues aside and started muttering something - clearly reinforcing his angry complaint to another employee. Anyway, here's the bigger problem: the sorbet that my daughter got was very standard - it is her favourite dessert and her assessment was that it was nothing special and "I could get that anywhere." My sundae was $7 for a tiny plastic cup with a skimpy amount of caramel and topped with one very modest squirt of whipped cream, which is a critical component of any sundae (I suspect that the bossman would have frowned on more than this modicum of what is probably one of the more expensive toppings). The "Ferraro Rocher" ice cream tasted nothing like that treat, even though it was smooth and decent. Again nothing special and not overly tasty. The main gimmick of this place, which one reviewer noted, is that they make their own waffle cones, and the pleasant sweet smell permeates the street around it. My son said that the cone really was fantastic, but I didn't taste it. Oh... one other thing: although there was a stuffed city garbage out front of the establishment, there were no receptacles close to the outdoor tables/benches, and when I went back inside to throw out my plastic sundae cup, there did not appear to be any inside either. Another frugal measure I wonder? So... all in all: ice cream is nothing special, and the sundaes are not worth the money, but you may want to go for the cone, as long as you don't mind supporting people who don't believe in treating employees with respect. $20 for two cones, a sundae, and service with a growl (plus $2 sympathetic tip to dressed down employee) - I think you can do better. I certainly won't be back.
