  • If you happen to be traveling through Terminal 1 in Pearson International airport in Toronto- take a minute to stop by the Molson Pub located just down the escalator past the security check point. Since I have to travel alot for work- my expectations for airport food and the places that serve it are pretty low. Thus my surprise when I walked into this place after hearing my flight was going to be delayed and being welcomed like a regular customer by a gregarious bartender who made my night. I surreptitiously looked around to make sure he was talking to me and then shimmied up to the large bar. Maybe being the only woman in the place helped. Maybe they treat everyone that way. Maybe they have been trained to be overly nice to those of us who are road weary. Whatever the reason- the next hour was probably the most pleasant one I spent the whole time I was in Toronto. Bill (not his real name but he said his Greek name was too much for my first visit!) quickly drew me a cold Molson and proceeded to tempt me with offerings from the menu. Glancing around- it appeared that the fish and chips were the thing to get so I sipped my beer chatting with other stranded travelers and the wait staff while I waited for my food. Only in an airport can you meet an astro physicist, a professional golfer, an actor and a grandfather expecting his 12th grandchild within the course of 10 minutes! Once the food came I was again surprised. It had actually been cooked and not just reheated as so many bars in airports do. The fries were thick, the fish flaky and hot and I was a happy girl. I probably could have sat talking to my new friends all night- but just then my flight announcement played over the loudspeaker. Back to Chicago I must go- but not without some fond memories of a bar in an airport and a bartender named Bill. Don't worry guys- you'll see me again. You can count on it.
