| - In February or March of this year, Joseph-Beth moved to S. 27th and Sidney Streets, a block away from its original location at S. 27th and Carson. At half the size, it's now merely large-ish rather than huge. The store on Carson St. started out packed with books when it opened five or six years ago (and it had two working fireplaces!), but the retail portion of the retail/office/residential development it's in has never reached expectations. J-B's stock got thinner and thinner with more and more empty space between the books,.CDs and DVDs were drastically reduced and remainder/bargain books took over much of the space. J-B didn't need its huge space for the number of books it stocked. At the new location--attractive, but not spectacular-- the fiction, children's books and merchandise, and magazine sections are still good, but the art, computer, reference, and business sections are weak. There seems to be a big turnover in the staff, but they are of the helpful, informed sort.
