| - Oh my, I don't even know where to begin. Buckle up and settle in. This will be a long one.
Kinka Izakaya had the honour (I'm so full of myself) of being last year's chosen place for my friend's annual Christmas get-together.
I've been to a handful of izakaya places before (Nome, and even Kinka Izakaya located on Church St) and I've always had such a great time. The atmosphere, the people and the food are really top notch. Their enthusiasm is really what puts a smile on my face though, whether it be greeting the customers or celebrating their birthdays (their energy is limitless, honestly). The special on Thursday is the sake bomb (a shot of sake balanced on chopsticks resting on a glass of beer. I'm not sure if it was the drink I enjoyed or the whole experience accompanying the drink, but it's an absolute must if you visit on that day. There's a chant that goes along with the whole experience, but I won't delve into the details.. you just have to do it, trust.
We ordered the set menu ($40/person and it had to be a unanimous decision) along with a few other dishes and holy cow (!!) was there a lot of food. Beyond what we could handle, but for the most part it was scrumptious. The standouts were the torched sushi (salmon and saba), salmon tataki and the karubi (beef short ribs). I had the almond tofu for dessert and it was absolutely divine. The perfect way to end my meal.
Anyways, so my review wasn't as long as I thought it was going to be (whew), but I'm sure I'll find new things to love every time I come back.. which will be plenty.
