  • I came here for one specific food, and it was delicious. Matcha Cafe Maiko is the newest hotspot for dessert and drinks, and it's in the distant streetside corner of the massive yet constantly crowded Spring Mountain Plaza on Jones. They took over the old location of Snow White Cafe and introduced a menu full of drinks and desserts based on matcha (the ubiquitous Japanese green tea, processed into a powder before being whisked into water and possibly being used for dessert applications) or hojicha (roasted green tea). Fancy floats and lattes weren't what drew me in. I came for the promise of matcha soft serve ice cream, which I'd enjoyed multiple times in California (still no Japan vacation, boo hiss) and hoped would come to Vegas at some point. A Henderson shop recently introduced matcha soft serve, but I disliked theirs. Fortunately the matcha soft serve ($5.50) tonight was pretty awesome. It was downright silky as it should be, and it was creamy and perhaps a little thicker than other versions. The matcha flavor was easily tasted, even if you didn't get a bite with the matcha powder dusted on top. Texture and flavor: check and check. However, there are downsides. First and foremost, it's kinda expensive for the portion. Yeah, I don't have to wait to go to California for my fix now, but maybe I'll still wait a little longer than I'd like to. Also, although the waffle cone (default and perhaps the only serving vessel for soft serve) is crunchy and cracks easily in a contained way when you bite it, the flavor somehow masks the matcha. Finally, are matcha and plain vanilla really the only options for flavor? I'm the guy who goes to gelaterias and tries around half the selection, so I could use something different once in a while. That said, I highly recommend that anyone with a sweet tooth or a matcha tooth make their way to Matcha Cafe Maiko ASAP to sink their tongues and spoons into the matcha soft serve. This is now easily my go-to dessert if I'm dining at any of the numerous restaurants in the neighborhood.
