  • I finally had my first Mitchell's Ice Cream experience. Many of my Cleveland friends have bragged about their ice cream, so I had some high expectations...and they were definitely met! My first time there I ordered the Caramel Sea Salt (caramelized brown sugar and sea salt). It was delicious. The prices are a bit steep for a scoop of ice cream ($3.35) but when you get to the front of the line and see how big the scoop is and how tasty it is, it's not such a bad price after all. My second time there I ordered chocolate peanut butter cup, again a heaping scoopful. The chocolate ice cream itself wasn't anything special from any other high end ice cream, but there were so many big chunks of peanut butter cup, enough for every bite. My boyfriend ordered the chocolate malt ($4.95) both times (btw he tends to consider himself a malt aficionado). The first time they gave him a chocolate shake by mistake. It was good, but it was made with chocolate ice cream (I guess chocolate malts are not made with chocolate ice cream) and wasn't the malt he'd ordered...so he was disappointed. The second time we finally got the malt (this time made with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup). He said he liked it, although not the best. To me the malt flavoring wasn't very noticeable and I think Sweet Moses makes better malts. Mitchell's put more malt flavoring in your malts! They use Hartzler's milk, I have never had their milk, but their egg nog is to die for (save that for another review) so I can only assume their milk is something special. Also it seems that most of the premium ice cream shops in Cleveland tend to use their milk. The store and building itself is also pretty impressive. You can go upstairs and view the entire kitchen from above, watching them make ice cream is cool. Also you know there's no funny stuff going on in there if you can see everything. Be warned, the lines can be long and seem impossible to get to the front in any reasonable time, but rest assured, there are a lot of people working the counter and those lines move really fast. Oh and they also let me bring my dog in with me to order my ice cream. I love places that are dog friendly! So many more flavors of ice cream still to try...a few blocks from home...I will be down there a lot this summer. Let's just hope my waistline can take all these visits.
