  • I believe in supporting the local Greek Orthodox churches and a fun way to do that is to go to their festivals. So of course, we are in the Phoenix area and hear about a Greek Festival, no brainer, we had to go. Parking was a breeze and free, admission was only $3 and everyone is happy and friendly. All great points. The festival is held on the church grounds, their parking lot to be exact, so be prepared if it is a hot day, the asphalt can get heated. As festivals go, this one is on the smaller side, this can be a positive or a negative depending on your point of view. However it was very easy to navigate and visit all the shops. They had a lot of Greek imports and/or influenced (never quite understood the Disney dvds for sale). The BEST thing from this festival was that they had Marides for sale, for you non-Greeks,(and the booth vendor) they are small fried fish called smelt. They are delicious and crunchy and addictive and are rarely found in the US. The food all in all was very good. I would have preferred a thicker tzatziki sauce, but the souvlaki pita was very tasty. On the negative side, even though they had a lot of eating area covered for shade, people had sat down and camped out and it was hard to find a spot and eat. The dance floor was set up in a way too that you basically had to be standing to watch, there were very few seats available. TIP: they have a wonderful little cookbook for sale, that was produced by the parishioners of the church. Pick one up, it's not expensive and you will be able to go home and make home cooked Greek food for yourself.
