  • I went to Harvest for a business dinner with a colleague and two of our suppliers a few weeks ago. The concept of Harvest is a familiar one in Madison with a focus on local suppliers and the relationship with the farmers. The owner used to be the chef de cuisine at E'toille and brings a nice level of class to the small restaurant. When my colleague and I were first seated I began to peruse the wine list while we waited for our dinner companions and was pleased to see a good selection of European wines as well as some of my favorites from the Napa Valley. Harvest's menu is set up as a short-ish list of small plates they suggest you might share with the table and a short-ish list of large plates intended as entrees. I ordered the lamb carpaccio which was a small plate and the scallops that is also a small plate but they were offering that evening as a large plate option as well with just more scallops on the plate. The carpaccio was served with a salty basil pesto and olive oil and was very tasty, though the ratio of lamb to pesto was a little off (too much pesto). The scallops were divine, served with perfectly sweet cantaloupe and a cream sauce. Decadent and melt in your mouth. For dessert (because when your company is paying, you always get dessert) I had a lemon shortcake with chantilly cream. It was pretty tasty though all of my dinner companions ordered the chocolate ganache and I had a little bit of chocolate envy. Overall the food was good, well prepared, the ambiance was nice and the service was good. My biggest issue (if you want to call it that) was the price/value. Everything about Harvest gives you the impression that it's a super nice, upscale restaurant. Including the $70 a person pricetag when you include wine and dessert. But I don't think that the food was really worth the price. Sure, it was tasty and well made, there was nothing wrong with it. However, it lacked finesse. It lacked the WOW factor that makes you feel like it's really worth it to be spending your money. I love scallops and a good cream sauce and mine were tasty, but I could have easily made that at home for a third of the cost. And the other two thirds wasn't made up for in the rest of the experience. I would be happy to go to Harvest again and would enjoy myself, but only if someone else is picking up the bill.
