| - Chase Field is a good ballpark to watch a game, but unfortunately, there are a few flaws with this stadium that should be noted. The first of which is no fault of the ballpark or the Diamondbacks: the closed roof. Yes, I understand that due to the extreme heat outside an indoor ballpark is a necessity, but as I watched a game here I couldn't stop thinking that baseball is a game that has to be played outside to get the maximum experience. The vibe inside the stadium felt more like a museum than a professional baseball game. It was just strangely quiet during the game with very little fan reaction or noise. I feel for all the young D'Back fans who grow up never being able to see a baseball game played outside.
The second flaw: stronger AC on the lower level than the upper level. The whole stadium is indeed air conditioned, but as we took our seats in the upper level we noticed that it was much cooler by the lower level seating. I don't know if this can actually be fixed, but it is a quirk and an annoying one at that.
The third flaw: No escalators? Walking up a few flights of stairs to get to the upper level was no big deal for us, but what's up with the lack of escalators in this ballpark? I am guessing that there are elevators located throughout the ballpark for fans who cannot or do not want to walk up stairs, but these elevators were not clearly marked and I did not notice any.
Of course, every ballpark has flaws and Chase Field is no exception, but the positives outweigh the negatives by far. It is clear that the people of Arizona love their team; they are proud of their team and they want them to be successful. The fans are lucky to have a good ballpark that really gels with the vibe of the team...red and gold colors throughout the ballpark, a nice rotunda area with a giant map of Arizona on the floor, a small dedication to their 2001 championship team...all really well done. You really know you are watching a D'Backs game when you step into Chase Field, unlike other teams like my hometown Mets who play in a stadium that might as well be for the Pirates. Also, food prices seemed reasonable. I noticed many areas that had discount priced food and beverages...a nice touch. I also noticed a section that had "all you can eat" seats, also a nice touch. Parking at the stadium is quite easy, as there are many private lots that charge anywhere between $8 to $12 from what I noticed. That's a pretty decent price compared to many other stadiums who charge as much as $20, like the Mets.
To sum it up, Chase Field is a good ballpark, taking into consideration the geography and population of the surrounding area, but it a GREAT place for the loyal D'Back fans to root for their team, roof and all.
