| - This is a not-to-miss side trip from Asheville! Seriously, every single time we go to Asheville, we're sure to stop at Hickory Nut to stock up. It's in a little town called Fairview (near Looking Glass Creamery, also worth a visit!), only 15-20 minutes from Asheville. If you're going back to Charlotte afterwards like we do, you can also take a pretty route home that winds you down 74 into Lake Lure/Chimney Rock without adding too much time to the trip.
Throw a cooler in the back of your car and spend some time shopping their little market. They always give us ice for our cooler, btw. We usually take home skirt steak, ribs, ground beef and hot dogs. They have a wide selection, so I'm sure you'll find your favorites, too. The quality of their meat (especially the fresh/not frozen items) is unrivaled.
They recently opened a deli counter that serves a great lunch. Along with lunch -- I had an amazing bowl of chili last time -- we've also picked up some amazing pastrami and bacon ends there. So, don't forget to browse up there when you're shopping, too.
Before you leave, check the ice cream selection. If they have the bacon flavor, do yourself a favor and get 2-scoops!
