  • I have a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art, I've worked in an upscale art gallery, I've worked for a small, family owned frame shop and I've worked for a nationwide hobby frame shop. Trust me, I know the ins and outs of the business of displaying art. I also frame a LOT of items for myself, my friends, and my family, and I'm incredibly particular because I know what goes on behind the scenes in both situations. I will be the first to implore you to NEVER, EVER go to a national chain hobby store. Just don't. Forget the 50%, 60% and 70% off sales. When most of those frames are STYROFOAM composite yet the staff can't tell it apart from actual WOOD, where exactly is your money going? It's paying for a corporate fat cat's bonus in another state, that's what. It's paying the insurance premiums that cover all the claims filed for the countless items that are damaged and destroyed every day by unskilled hourly workers. It's paying for unnecessary add-ons like spacers when you don't need them, UV glass when you don't want it, and huge triple mats to make your project larger and thus more expensive, all while your precious memories are at the mercy of untrained staff who THROW AWAY your art and then have the nerve to call themselves 'professional framers!' Framing art is an art in itself, and preserving memories at near museum-quality standards can't be taught in a 6-hour session. Certainly not by a trainer from some distant corporate headquarters using a binder that explains how to frame an item. Would you let someone babysit your child using only a binder for reference on how to deal with children? Of course not. You wouldn't even let someone watch your gerbil with that level of experience, so why would you give something precious and irreplaceable to someone with little qualifications other than a name tag and apron? Every piece is different, and learning how to create beautiful, secure framing solutions without damaging the art is a highly specialized and skilled trade that requires a close apprenticeship experience. Hobby chains don't teach this in-depth level of learning because if they screw up, they have the luxury of falling back on stronger sales in the yarn and scrapbooking departments. Local shops are where it's at, because their very livelihood depends on doing an outstanding job. Enter Megan's Custom Framing. Not only does Megan have an eye for design, but she's got an entrepreneurial spirit that you just don't see in young 20-somethings. I've heard her on the phone with vendors, negotiating for the best deal so that she can pass those savings on to her clientele. I've heard her speak to other customers and I never thought she was unprofessional. I think she is personable, relaxed, and fun to work with. The quality of what she sells compared to her prices can't be beat. I know, because I've shopped around town and I keep bringing her more work. If you bring her a quote from a big-box craft store, I'm sure she'd be thrilled to beat their price while giving you a higher quality product. That's the beauty of working the CEO and CFO of a small, local business, and your dollars stay in your community! Every time I stop in, it never ceases to amaze me that someone this young has this much grit and determination to succeed. When you combine creative talent, business savvy, and a charming location in a trendy neighborhood, I have no doubt that Megan's Custom Framing will be around for the long haul.
