  • My son's 4th birthday party was held recently. I heard about Maddy's Fatty's through the grapevine several weeks ago and asked to see some work samples. I met with both Madeline and Enza to give them the basics of what I was looking for. The main thing was that I needed to feed at least 40 people and the cake had to be egg-free because of a severe egg allergy in the family. I threw out some ideas, and one of them was "Lightning McQueen" from the "Cars" movies. They gave me options for flavors and ingredients, all that fit the dietary restrictions of making the cake 100% egg-free. Though they tout that they can create anything, including vegan, egg-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, and regular varieties of confections, they had very very few work samples to go by. I think they only started their company several months ago. However, I saw one beach-themed cake in their portfolio that included fine details like wood grain on a tiny fondant bench. It was really all I had to go by, as far as their skill with fondant goes. Their prices are very reasonable. A year ago, I ordered a last-minute sheet cake just like the ones you can buy off the shelf without notice at your local grocery store. Since the grocery stores were out of stock, I had to contact a local baker, who charged $100 for the equivalent. (about $60 higher than the same size / same quality at Safeway, Harris Teeter, or Shaw's) I won't get into the specific price of my cake, but let's just say I will be buying all my future cakes from them. Even if it involves shipping them, should I have to move again. I posted a picture of the "Lightning McQueen" cake. It was delicious! It had a marshmallow fondant, a light strawberry frosting, and egg-free vanilla bean cake. I'm so glad I decided to give them a chance. They went above and beyond my expectations. My only criticism is that their company should be called "Maddy's Fatties," not "Maddy's Fatty's." Oh, and the cake lasted outside in 100-degree heat (shaded) for over 3 hours, and what we had leftover still tastes good refrigerated.
