  • I only belong to this particular gym because my membership is priced low and it's about 3 minutes from my house. LA Fitness took over the gym about 18 months or so ago and haven't put any capital into the place in any noticeable area. With the change in ownership I had hoped things would improve, if anything, they have regressed. Cost cutting measures are apparent. It seems to me they either fired or greatly reduced the overnight cleaning crew, which would be fine if the place was sparkling clean or things like the anti-bacterial liquid was always filled, paper towel machines always loaded, etc., but they're not. Secondly, the pool (which admittedly I don't use) is now closed daily 2-3pm under the guise (I believe) of having to do chemical checks. Of course, that also saves the gym 365 hours of lifeguard labor per year (just over 9 weeks of labor), clever! Also, the sauna, or the whirlpool, or the water fountain or a treadmill, a cross-country machine, etc, always seem to be pulled from service, much more so than even in the Bally's days. I don't believe this to be my imagination. My guess is that they either "streamlined" their maintenance department or went in another direction (read: cheaper) with whomever they use on the outside and now either parts or labor is not available, both routine and otherwise, and machines go down more often. I haven't noticed any new equipment. Period. If you do join, do yourself a favor and DO NOT drive past the LA Fitness on the Southside as it appears, from the outside, to be everything the Bethel Park location isn't: well-lit, modern, clean. Finally, it seems they have fairly recently shaved 2 hours off the Sunday close time. Previously the facility closed at 10pm on Sundays and I believe it's now 8pm. Just another cost-cutting maneuver that I'm sure they justify through internal corporate memos. Congrats on the savings, gang! It seems as if LA Fitness is regretting their decision to purchase this old Bally's or that they have something big in store and just haven't announced it yet. I think it's the former as there's been no announcements concerning the state of the club. Whatever the case, they have obviously made a concerted effort to not spend to improve the club either through routine maintenance or capital investments. I think on the club's webpage you can also see an artist rendering of a re-imagined entrance (probably the least of the club's needs). It's been on there since they bought the place and maybe, just maybe, they're looking for a wealthy club alumni, kind of like a college, to pony up the money and rebuild the place! Finally, it seems the photos attached to this place on yelp are simple stock photos, not of this actual club. With all the said, if you can get in the place for a low rate and only plan on using the treadmills and some weight machines, you'll be ok. Just don't concern yourself with the exceedingly warm temperatures in the summer, the dim lighting, and occasional overall dank feel of the place. Have fun!
