  • We stayed here for a night on the way back to Reno from the Grand Canyon. Perfect pit stop. Excellent value for the price $39/night plus $24/night resort fee. Our room was spacious, clean, and we were up high enough for a moderately nice view. The Negatives: Parking garage is adequate but not great. Parking in the garage is free. They do offer valet for those who can afford it. In terms of safety with children, I felt much better having brought both my tazer and my mace. We were able to get to our car and back as needed without incident, but be careful with kids: it's not well lit and people drive scary in there. It's located in a pretty sketchy part north of the strip, but I like a good value, sometimes to the point of absurdity. The casino is nice, but the people who frequent the casino are "characters." Keep your kids close to you. Hold hands. I don't play in the casino, but in order to get to the reservation desk, or to your room, you gotta walk through parts of it. My kids are pretty sheltered, so just walking to the reservation desk was an adventure for them. They LOVED that. Like sitting too close to a bonfire. *sigh* The Positives: Here's what made me very happy about the Stratosphere. First, as a hotel guest, you get free admission to the observation deck (with 3 kids along, this saves me a fortune). Also as a hotel guest, 2-for-1 day passes for the thrill rides. My kids had a blast! In terms of thrill, it's an 11 on a 1-10 scale those rides are beyond scary. My two teenagers rode until midnight, and my little one (aged 7) stayed with me (we are afraid of heights) and just took in breathtaking views of Las Vegas. It's very high up. 104 floors up; you get the same kind of views of all of Vegas as you do views of Chicago from the 94th floor observation deck of John Hancock Center. Incredible! There is also a very talented caricature artist who drew us at a reasonable price (I found a coupon online cartoonvegas.com). See my photos for the caricature of us. In it, the artist makes fun of my high cheekbones, but did it in a way that didn't piss me off. She also gave me long eyelashes, which I appreciate, because I am mostly Asian and I probably have none. Anyhow, one thing that was a pleasant surprise is the amount of yummy food you can get at the observation deck snack bar. I fed four of us dinner for $20! We had a $5 baked potato the size of a minivan (now that I think about it, it was probably slightly bigger) with ALL the fixings imaginable! They have a loaded bar of toppings (bacon bits, cheese, chives, dressings, etc. think generous salad bar without the lettuce). Not all you can eat, but all you can fit on your potato. We also got a giant clam chowder bowl ($5) and all the toppings you can fit on that. The cashier took care of us and gave 4 free clear water cups. Plus tax, the bill was less than $13, so we paid with a $20 and tipped the remainder. I feel like they lost money on us. That's always a good feeling. The staff is helpful and friendly, and the customer service is very good. We will book here again.
