  • My first time trying Karaikudi, and I found lots to like. One minor glitch, though: the host's station is in a little foyer not easily visible from the main part of the restaurant, and no one was there when we arrived, nor did anyone notice us as we stood there and waited. I finally had to flag someone down, but after that, we were seated promptly, and the service was courteous and attentive. I liked how the interior space was divided into two seating areas, so that it's quieter & feels more private. You can converse at a normal volume. The dining area was clean, warmly lit, and nicely decorated. The menu was large but laid out with tabs to make it easy to find the section you wanted, if you were looking for something in particular. I knew I wanted to try some of the regional specialties, so I got the Kerala fish curry & the guthi vengaya, a curry of stuffed baby eggplant. My friend & I ordered both at a spice level of '4' (1-10 scale, 10 = hottest). The fish had a nice spicy kick that didn't overwhelm the other flavors of the dish, BUT, I couldn't taste any coconut milk (so I guess maybe it overwhelmed that flavor, lol). The eggplant was a little less spicy, but still DELICIOUS - I would get it again. My friend got the Murg Malai Kebab after being told they were out of Hariyali chicken. It was very tender and a little too salty, as if it had been brined too long before hitting the clay oven (the salt level moderated a bit as it cooled, though). We also got paneer kulcha and lemon rice, and I got a glass of Sauvignon blanc and, later, a mango lassi. All were really good. Between the pleasant atmosphere, good food, and the fact that there are 6-7 more things on the menu I still want to try, I'll be back!
