We tried to go to Pho 43rd Express but they are closed on Mondays...Big Bummer. So we decided to try Da Vang since it's close. Our family used to come up from Tucson when I was in college, YEARS ago, to eat here. It might have been because it was one of the few Vietnamese restaurants in Phoenix at the time and it resembled what was cooked at home. That being said, we KNOW our Vietnamese food!! Tonight's experience completely fell short of our expectations. The broth to my seafood Pho was soooooo bland I really had to doctor it up with lots of fish sauce. My brother's beef stew Pho was about the same...BLAND! My niece's special combo broken rice was so-so. The sweet and sour fish sauce that accompanies the rice dish was too sweet...not the correct balance of sweet, sour and salty. My boyfriend's bbq pork fried rice was just ok as well. The aroma was nice when it came out but he didn't touch the bbq pork pieces in the rice...they were dry and tasted like they were weeks' old pork that they didn't want to throw out so they decided to use it for fried rice. We also got shrimp spring rolls, one of my favorite dishes. These rolls were also bland and didn't have any mint in them...SO disappointing!! We will definitely NOT be returning to this place and will go back to Pho 43rd Express, except on Mondays...their Pho is YUMMY!!!! I promise you that, this is coming from a full blood Asian born in Vietnam that knows her Vietnamese food!
