| - While the presentation can be impressive at first sight, the food leaves a lot to be desired.
It was my first time at the Windsor, went in on a Sunday afternoon looking for some respite from the heat. The darkened interior was very inviting and the crowd was lively. We sat in a booth and were quickly asked if we had been helped. Speaking of just the service alone, it was absolutely 5 stars. It's the food that takes the Windsor down a couple pegs.
First we ordered the ceviche. Seemed standard enough, hard to mess something up like a simple ceviche. Somehow, the kitchen brought out a sort of "deconstructed" ceviche, just completely the opposite of what a traditional ceviche would be. If you've ever had Mexican Mariscos, you'll remember that it will sometimes be on the spicier side, completely drowning in Clamato. This ceviche just screamed "Overcomplicated", there's mango in it for fucks sake. Imagine it in layers; mango and some cucumbers on the bottom, shrimp placed on top, jalapeno(or possibly serrano) peppers above that, diced in such a way that instead of getting small bites of pepper, you would get a mouthful of pepper and just torch your taste buds. Then, avocado slices and cilantro meandering on top with no real use. Because the avocado was in slices, it was hard to get any of it in the ceviche, meaning you were eating it SEPERATE from the bite of ceviche. The chips as well were too thin. Crispy yes, just lacking in fortitude.
After that let-down, we split a chicken sandwich. I thought to myself "Spicy chicken sandwich, hard to fuck that up". Boy was I wrong. It was a juicy piece of chicken breast that was grilled instead of fried, that smelled fantastic and yet tasted completely bland. My nose was telling that it should be smokey and spicy yet my tongue was flabbergasted by the complete lack of flavor. It was served on a soft and toasted bun, filled with some fresh greens and I believe some house made mayo. For some reason though, this sandwich was the return of those dreaded mangos. There was a layer at the bottom that also lacked flavor and added nothing to the sandwich. It's not that the flavor was subtle, it was non-existent. I'm not one to suggest a change but I believe that if it was instead done as a crispy chicken breast, with peppers mixed in with the flour and then fried, we would have a much better sandwich. We ordered sweet potato fries as a side and after what I had experienced at that point, they were a pleasant surprise and were crispy and delicious.
Drinks on the other hand were just short of excellent. I had a Moscow Mule that was sweet and tangy, great drink to escape the heat. I just wish the food matched the quality of the drinks and the service. It's a shame because I live just a few blocks away and would love to take my friends there. For now, it looks like we'll go elsewhere for our dinner and drinks.
