| - We've been here a couple of times before and always thought of Soyo as a three star place. Nothing really stands out, but it's convenient Korean food without having to trek out to Spring Mountain and the decor is kinda cute. After this last visit I will not go back again.
I was craving seafood pancake that night and we got one as an appetizer. It was drenched in grease and not crispy at all, though flavor was decent. My husband got some kind of spicy tofu soup which he rated "very mediocre". I was definitely not wanting something spicy that night and went with the innocent looking number 12, listed as "tofu and assorted vegetables boiled in anchovy stock with fermented soybean paste". It didn't have a pepper after the menu item to indicate spiciness, so I thought I was pretty safe. The soup came and I saw floating specks of red chili pepper, a bad sign. The first sip confirmed my suspicions, the soup was most definitely very spicy, not just a little spicy.
When I complained to the waitress that I felt mislead by the menu, all I got was an apologetic "yeah sorry, it's supposed to be spicy". Really? Complained to another waitress and she at least went to ask the manager, whose answer was "the soybean paste has chili pepper in it". They offered to "take out" the chili pepper in the soup. 5 minutes later, the soup came back warmer and looking almost exactly the same as before, and tasting just as spicy. I gave up at that point and decided to just eat rice and the few non spicy banchans on the table.
In an effort to not totally waste food, I fished out and ate the 5 pieces of tofu that were in the soup (yeah I counted). The other assorted "vegetables" included a few tiny pieces of zucchini, a whole lot of mushy leftover banchan pickled radishes, and guess what, some jalapeno pepper pieces (I guess they count as vegetables)...Aside from the overwhelming spiciness, the soup was totally flat and bleh. The whole experience left me with a bitter taste in my mouth and I'm swearing off Soyo for good.
