  • I received a gift certificate and decided I would use it. I have only had two other massages: one at a higher end spa in Scottsdale and the other at a smaller competitor in Ahwatukee so I was expecting the same thing. Boy was I disappointed. Their lobby was small and decorated very cheaply. It did not have that relaxing "spa day" feel. Heck, the mammography office feels more spa than this did. The front desk was very crowded both behind the desk with 3 girls there and there were 3 other clients crammed in front. I stood back waiting for them to finish with one of the other customers and she called me over into this little space at the counter. It just seemed like they were trying to "squeeze me in". Then they took me back to the relaxation room. It was horrible! All it was were 3 leather couches with basically no lights in there. It was pitch black and just seemed awkward with 4 other people sitting in there. Not relaxing at all. The therapist came and got me and took me to the room, which was ok. nothing special. Walking down the hallway with all the rooms, it just reminded me of some sketchy brothel type place. Not very soothing or classy. The music played while trying to be soothing and spalike was not very good. My therapist was very nice but was way too rough. I winced in pain almost the entire time and had to tell them constantly to ease up. they never once asked me if his level of touch was ok. they also talked the ENTIRE time. Even when I would try to be quiet and relax, would ask me questions. I honestly thought at one point that was going to break a bone or puncture a lung it was so hard. They also did not even offer a towel for me to wipe off any of the excess massage oil on my skin, scalp or face. yuck! Then, perhaps the most irritating part....as soon as you are dressed and come out of the room, they hand you a cup of water and walk you to the front where I was told they left the schedule for me with recommendations on areas to work on. It was nothing more than a plea for more business. Nothing scientific about it and no explanation of why they felt I needed to come back (tight muscles, sore spots, etc). The front desk girl immediately starts in on the sales pitch. I was fairly relaxed even though i was in pain from the massage and she starts totally killing my spa buzz. in addition, they do this in front of other customers that are literally right next to you so everyone hears your business. this place is definitely the fast food of spa/massage experiences. Even at the smaller massage spa I went to, they had a pleasing, soothing environment, asked questions about what i wanted, took my que for quiet massage and afterwards, provided a robe, encouraged me to relax in their spa environment and drink some water and offered cookies and juice before leaving. Massage Envy was nothing like this and truthfully I wound up walking out just as stressed as when I left. I will not be returning ever again and will pay the extra money for a true professional massage experience.
