| - First impression. 3 stars. We entered around 6pm on a Monday. We noticed the Please Wait to be Seated sign with a sign-in log. It was confusing because we stood there...a family of 6 just standing there for a few minutes that felt like 15minutes. We were completely ignored as if the workers were deliberately not looking up just so that they don't have to acknowledge us. After a few minutes of awkward standing...my husband walks up to the guy by the register to ask what the deal is. Then he readily explains to my husband how it works. First off, it would have been nice to have been acknowledged. I understand things get busy but I come from a background of customer service that no matter how busy you are...you should keep a constant habit of looking up at your surroundings. I almost walked out, but hell...we drove from the North side, traffic and all, just to eat dinner there for my son's birthday...I was going to stick it out.
So, apparently the please wait to be seated sign along with the put your name down is for their sushi side. When we wrote our names down it was like magic. Someone came and sat us down. We opted to eat at the sushi side because we were planning on some sushi anyways. I honestly don't know if on the grill side you have to wait to be seated. I'm assuming you'd just order then sit at whatever tables are available.
Once seated, the servers were completely friendly and homely feeling. However, I couldn't shake off this weird vibe I was getting in there. Don't know if it was the aftershock from standing around waiting part, but whatever, and so we ordered.
Kids collectively ordered the classic Loco moco, mini chicken katsu, and side order of fries. I decided for just the spam saimin, while the husband ordered spicy tuna, spicy hamachi, and the spicy salmon roll. M-W is all day happy hour. 50% off their sushi rolls with the exception of their nigiris and hand rolls. That is an awesome deal! Such deal made their sushi taste even better. The husband enjoyed his. Typical.
My saimin was pretty much....saimin. There was nothing extra special or memorable. But, I wasn't expecting anything magical considering it's simply a spam saimin. I did wish my saimin was a little less mushy. It did the job on my saimin crave, though.
I can't tell you what the katsu tasted like but the husband said twas legit. My oldest kanacked off his Loco moco. He opted for all rice and boy was that plate serious. Couldn't tell you what that tasted like, but it looked homely put together.
The fries tasted like the frozen seasoned french fries you can buy yourself. I don't mind that taste so no biggy. It was nice and crispy and that's all the mattered.
Overall, we spent about 34bucks. The server that took care of us was right-on with it. It made up for what had lacked. Once you figure out what happens when you enter...you'll pretty much be taken care of. I did notice it was a man's world that evening. Male chefs, cooks, servers...thought that was kinda cool because that's not something I aways come across. Plus, they all seemed super nice.
I'd return for sure especially for their sushi happy hour if we are in the area or feel like going on a drive. I think it's great that our family has options. The kids can get their 808 fix while the hubs and I can get our sushi on. Overall, I can only give 3 stars because it honestly was just mediocre to me. Maybe in the future I can up a star.
Definitely kid friendly. Highchairs with working buckles, yay! But leave your stroller in the trunk especially if it's busy. For a Monday night...they were poppin'.
