| - Smart & Final seems to be an interesting twist on the big box warehouse and grocery concepts. But in reality, it's neither.
I came here for the first time today, after passing it twice a day for the last year. The parking lot has always seemed empty, and they really do not seem to have much buzz about them. Surprisingly, this is the first Yelp review after being open twelve months.
They market themselves as:
"Smart & Final is the smaller faster warehouse store where businesses and households find great savings on quality food and supplies. We have everything you need for cooking, entertaining and cleaning-up afterwards." They say their average store is in the 25 - 40,000 square foot range. That's half the size of an average Fry's.
I find some of that hard to believe. That's because there are several restaurant supply stores here in the Valley with outstanding prices. My first impression is that Smart & Final's prices though good, are all over the map.
For instance, two litters of Pepsi, Coke, Seven-Up, RC Cola (photo) are priced at $1.69. But, if you buy four or more, it's only a dollar. So, their price system is geared to pushing the consumer into making larger purchases. The only problem here is that Fry's last week was selling the same brands for $0.99 with no minimum purchase required.
I believe where the average shopper would benefit, would be their slightly larger, family friendly sizes. For example, they carry the 48 oz size jar of jellies compared to the smaller 32 oz size found at Safeway, Fry's et cetera. Their unit prices were comparable on a per ounce basis.
One of the most intriguing items in their frozen section, was a box of sixteen White Castle Hamburgers (photo) for $10.99. That's only $0.69 each and a better deal as compared to the restaurant.
Of course, the nearest White Castle is probably over 1,000 miles away. LOL. No I didn't buy it -- that's because its not one o'clock in the morning! Sorry, that's a Midwest joke.
"So whether you are stocking up, planning a party or preparing a meal for your family, visit your local Smart & Final or Smart & Final Extra! We have just what you need!"
Well maybe. But it helps to know the prices you are paying before coming here though! Caveat emptor.
